Simple Solutions: Add Video to SMART Notebook with KeepVid

Many people have emailed me wanting to know how to grab a YouTube video and put it into SMART Notebook. By doing this you can avoid taking the kids to YouTube, whether that’s because YouTube is blocked or because you don’t like all the other “suggested videos” that pop up that may or may not be appropriate. So I have created this short video showing you how to use the website to capture those videos and put them right into SMART Notebook. It’s another simple solution!

Bob, this will be a useful tip for many teachers, I am sure!

In recent months I personally have had some glitches with KeepVid, and have started using the PwnYouTube bookmarklet, available at

Ironic note: Although YouTube itself is available in the Washington district, both KeepVid and PwnYouTube ARE blocked!

Thanks for all the info you share through your blog,

Amy, thanks for sharing! Always good to have other options. I would check with Charlie Roberts, your tech director as to why those sites are blocked. Sometimes if you request them, they will unblock them if you can show they have educational value. Glad you are enjoying the blog!

Does this work on the Mac platform? I received this question from one of my teachers:

I would love to do this but the “KeepVid” site keeps requesting that I download media player (which is for windows) and the site it takes you to is called “genieo” which does not have a media player download. I tried downloading other media players but still can’t get it to work. Any ideas? I used to use Youtube videos all the time for dance units but Zamzar no longer works for youtube

Julie, I’m not sure what is going wrong… Can you make a video of you doing it so I can see what is happening?
